Proposal to Authors

Aim:
Each chapter gives a comprehensive overview of the topic it covers by presenting its basic concepts, standard procedures and methods. The material should be organized in a way that both readers not familiar with the topic as well as experts could benefit.

Details:
Each chapter will stand on its own and therefore has to comprise introductory elements for the non-expert. However, these elements should not be too elementary. Basic knowledge in statistics of the reader is supposed. Examples and illustrations are appreciated and should be given where ever possible. It is in the responsibility of the author(s) whether a topic is treated from a more conceptual point of view or from an exemplary. Future perspectives will complete the presented material. Links to other chapters should be indicated by the authors and will then be highlighted.

Structure of chapters:

Introduction
The special topic of this chapter should be embedded in the context of the handbook and an overview of this field should be given. The sections of this chapter should be summarized.

Subchapters 1-x
The contents of the subchapters should cover the various aspects of the general topic. They should be as illustrative as possible without dwelling into deep mathematical derivations such that they can also be understood by researchers in health sciences who do not have the background of theoretical statisticians. Basic concepts, standard procedures and methods should be presented. All important problems and approaches should be preferably illustrated by examples.

Outlook
Recent advances and new perspectives should be addressed. The most relevant literature should be cited.

References
The list of references should be exhaustive, i.e. covering the whole range from introductory texts to recent publications, also for the advanced reader. References and citations should follow the rule of Springer-Verlag (Example and Style files will be distributed later).

Further Specifications
The current plan is for about 30 chapters. On average each chapter will be 20-30 printed pages. We encourage the use of color in figures however all figures should be designed meaningfully in black & white. The book will also appear in electronic form (HTML and pdf) with possible Quantlet links according to the Springer platform, see www.md-stat.com

Audience
Researchers and professionals in the applied sciences, research institutes, biostatisticians, computer scientiests, bioinformatics, financial engineers and computational finance.
